Winterthur Museum & Gardens
Winterthur, was the country estate of Henry Francis du Pont (1880-1969). Today, Winterthur (pronounced "winter-tour") is the premier museum of American decorative arts, with its singular collection of 85,000 objects made or used in America between about 1640 and 1860. The collection is displayed in the 175-room house, which is has been maintained to represent how it was when the du Pont family lived there. Winterthur is also home to a masterfully designed naturalistic garden, a significant research library, their annual Point-to-Point steeplechase races... a Brandywine valley rite of spring, their antique show, Yuletide and more events throughout the spring, summer and fall. The museum and garden are only 15 minutes away from the Brandywine River Hotel, and the drive can be taken through the stunningly beautiful back roads of the valley.
